Social planner
Schedule posts on a calendar months ahead, drag them to move them, and let Gene App send them when their time comes.
On this page
The Planner is the calendar half of the Posts tab. Use it to plan posts weeks or months ahead and let Gene App send them on time. It shows everything you have published, scheduled, drafted or that failed to send, a month or a week at a time, and it is where you write a post from.
Scheduling a post#
- Click any day to open the composer with that day already chosen, or press New post and pick the time yourself.
- Write the post (see Posts for pictures, words on the picture and captions).
- Use the bar along the bottom of the composer. It stays in view while you scroll, and it has three buttons:
- Save as draft, which keeps the post with no date at all. It is only there for a new post.
- Schedule, with the calendar icon, which opens a small box with Post on, a date and time. Pick one and press Schedule post to put the post on the calendar.
- Publish photo now (or Publish carousel now, Publish video now, depending on what you are posting), which sends it while you wait. Once every network has taken it you are back on the calendar, and the "Posted" message has a View button that opens the live post.
Once a post has a date, the Schedule button shows that date instead of the word Schedule, so you can see when it goes out and click it to change the time.
The time is your own local time, and it has to be in the future. A scheduled post goes out within five minutes of the time you set, because that is how often Gene App checks the calendar.
Drafts sit at the top of the planner until you give them a time. When Post new listings automatically is set to create drafts, each new listing's post lands here as a draft too. When it is set to publish automatically, the post shows as Scheduled at its paced time and goes out like any other scheduled post.
Posting from a listing#
From a listing in the planner header opens a popup with two choices:
- One listing: search by name or area and pick one. The composer opens with that listing's photos in and, with AI captions on, a caption drafted.
- Every new listing: the Post new listings automatically switch and its settings, the same ones as under Posts > Settings > New listings. See Post new listings automatically.
Moving a post#
Drag a card to another day. The time of day comes with it, so a nine o'clock post dragged to Thursday goes out on Thursday morning, not at midnight.
You can move anything that has not gone out yet: drafts, scheduled posts, and posts that failed. A published post cannot move, because it is already out, and neither can one that is being sent at that exact moment.
Opening a published post still lets you edit it, but changes never touch the post that already went out. Give it a new time and it goes out again as a new post.
Dragging a failed post to a new time is also how you retry it. Moving it clears the error and puts it back in the queue.
Reading a card#
Each card carries the time, the networks it is going to, the first lines of the caption, and a badge:
| Badge | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Draft | No date yet |
| Scheduled | Waiting for its time |
| Sending | Going out right now |
| Published | Out |
| Failed | Refused, with the reason on the card when you open it |
Click a card to open it. From there you can edit it, delete it, or hand it to Ads as the starting point for a paid campaign.
Editing a post#
Press Edit on a post's details to open it in the composer. A post that is already in the planner has no Save as draft button: the caption, pictures, listing and networks save as you go, with a Saving..., then Saved marker in the bottom bar, or "Not saved. Try again" with a Try again link if a save fails.
- Editing never changes the date. A scheduled post stays scheduled; move it with Schedule, by dragging the card, or with the date on its details.
- A picture still uploading is saved once it lands. If the post has a problem the bar already shows (no network picked, a picture the network will refuse), the edit is not saved until you fix it.
- Back to details and closing the dialog save anything still waiting first. Gene App only asks before you leave if that save failed.
- Publishing from here closes the dialog once every network has taken the post, and the calendar behind it updates.
When something fails#
A post fails when a network refuses it: a picture Instagram will not take, an expired sign-in, a video it could not process. The card turns red and the reason, in the network's own words, is on the detail panel.
Gene App does not retry automatically. A post a network refused for its content would just fail again, forever, and you would never find out why. Fix the thing it complained about, then drag the card to a new time.
Partly published posts#
One post can go to Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn at once, and each of those can succeed or fail on its own. If two work and one refuses, the post counts as published: something is on your profile now. The refusal is recorded against that network, and nothing is taken back down. When you press publish yourself and one network refuses, the composer stays open with a "Posted to 2 of 3 places" warning and the reason that network gave, instead of returning you to the calendar.
What this needs#
The planner needs a one-time database update. Until it is applied the calendar says so and publishing straight away keeps working normally, because publishing immediately never needed anywhere to store a plan.
