QR codes
Make a QR code for a flyer, sign board or brochure that opens a WhatsApp chat, a Gene form or a website, and see the scans and leads each one brings in.
QR codes lets you make a code for anything printed or shown on a screen (a flyer, a sign board, a brochure, a slide at an event) and see what each one brings in.
You find it in Flows > Inbound: QR codes is a row in the Inbound list, next to Meta Ads, Website, Webhooks and Imports. It shows how many codes you have and how many leads they brought in this month. Click it to open the QR codes page.
Every QR code is a lead source of its own. Leads that come in through it carry its name as their source, so you can tell the open house flyer from the sign board at the show flat.
Make a QR code#
Click New QR code, give it a name only you see, and pick what it opens:
- WhatsApp opens a chat with one of your WhatsApp numbers, with a message already typed for the lead, such as "Hi, I'd like more information about this property." Pick the number from your connected lines, or type another one with its country code. Give each code its own wording where you can; it is how Gene tells a hoarding from a poster.
- Form opens one of your Gene forms. Publish the form first, or a scan lands on a closed form.
- Website opens any web address. Gene adds UTM tags (utm_source=qr_code, utm_medium=qr and the code itself as utm_campaign), so your website analytics show the visit came from this code. Tags you already put on the address are kept.
Look#
Open a code and scroll to Look to make it yours. The preview on the left changes as you go, and everything saves by itself.
- Shape: Square, Rounded or Dots for the small modules.
- Corners: Square, Rounded or Round for the three big corner squares.
- Colour: six swatches (black, charcoal, Gene blue, navy, green, wine) or any colour by picker or hex. A light colour shows an amber note: dark on light scans best, on every phone and in bad light.
- Background: six swatches (white, paper, black, charcoal, navy, Gene blue) or any colour, or Transparent for a flyer with its own colour (the PNG and SVG keep it see-through; the preview shows a checker). Gene warns when the two colours have too little contrast to scan, and when the code is light on dark: most phones read that, not all.
- Logo: No logo, In the middle or Below. The workspace logo from Settings > Company is used unless you choose another: Change opens your logos (the workspace logo, its dark version, every image already in Files with the Brand folder first) and lets you upload a new one, which lands in Files under Brand for next time; with both a light and a dark version set there, Auto takes the dark version on a dark background and you can force either (PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG, under 2MB). In the middle, Gene raises the code's error correction so the covered part is forgiven and the code stays scannable. Below, the logo sits under the code in the downloads, outside the quiet zone.
Download and share#
Click a QR code to open it. From there:
- PNG downloads a large image (2048px wide), sharp enough for print, in the look you chose.
- SVG downloads a vector file for a designer or a print shop, with the logo inside the file.
- The short link under the code is what the code opens. Copy it to share the same thing as a link. It lives on your own domain when you have connected one for your portal (portal.yourco.com/q/...), otherwise on crm.gene.so/q/..., so a phone camera shows your brand before it opens.
The code points at that short Gene link, not straight at the destination. That is why you can change what it opens after it is printed: edit Opens and every printed copy follows. Everything saves as you go.
Scans and leads#
The list shows each code's Scans, Leads and Last scan. On a phone, each code shows its scans and leads under its name instead. Opening a code shows its scans and leads, and lists the leads it brought in, each linking to the contact.
- A scan is counted each time a person opens the code. Link previews and bots are not counted.
- A Form lead is credited to the QR code when the form is opened from it.
- A WhatsApp lead is credited when their first message is the one this code prefills. Gene recognises the message itself and an invisible mark it carries, so the lead sees only their message. Codes printed before 22 October 2026 end their message with a visible tag like [ref: k7qx2mp]; those keep working. Two codes with the same message are told apart by the mark; if a lead rewrites the message before sending, the chat still arrives, just without the code as its source.
- A Website visit is counted as a scan. Leads from your website keep the source of the form they fill in, with the UTM tags showing the QR.
A lead who already came in through another source keeps that first source. The QR code they scanned is still noted on their contact.
Regenerate a QR code#
Regenerate QR code, under the code's numbers when it is open, mints a new short code for the same entry after you confirm once more: a new pattern to print, the same name, destination, look, scans and leads. Printed copies of the old code open a page saying the code is not active. Use it when a code leaked or a reprint must not be confused with the old run.
Delete a QR code#
Delete QR code, under the code's numbers when it is open, takes it down after you confirm once more. Printed copies then open a page saying the code is not active. Leads it already brought in keep it as their source.
